Arthur William Pickering (on the Roll as W Pickering) was born 10 February1899 at Ashleyhay to Francis and Hannah Pickering.

Army Service Record
He enlisted 16 March 1917into the Army Service Corps aged 18 and 33 days whilst working as a gardener, living at Black Firs, Ashleyhay. Next of kin was listed as his father Francis Pickering. He entered France with the BEF in 1918. Awarded the British War and Victory medals, also the Silver War Badge [B258580]. H later trsnsferred to the 28th London Rifle Brigade (LRB) in the Artists Rifles Unit. He was discharged 3.3.19 aged 20 with a 30% degree of disablement and weekly pension of 8s 3d.
He had one blue chevron and one wounds stripe
In 1930 his record shows an application for Post Office employment listing the folloeing information:

I served in France with the Artists Rifles (1/28 London Rifles B Coy)

Note: The Artists Rifles was one of 26 volunteer battalions in the London and Middlesex areas that combined to form the new London Regiment. It became the 28th (County of London) Battalion of The London Regiment. The Artists Rifles was a popular unit for volunteers and recruitment was eventually restricted by recommendation from existing members of the battalion.
