Born in 1879 at Bonsall, Samuel was the son of Samuel and Selina Wright. His mother died when he was an infant. In 1905 he married Alice Ethel Farnsworth of Crich Carr and they went to live at Whatstandwell, where he worked at a carter. Samuel and his wife lived for a time near the church at Crich, before returning to Crich Carr, where he worked as a carter and later as a farmer with a milk delivery round.
