Robert was the son of William and Jane Wass, born at Crich Carr in 1899. He enlisted in January 1917, was posted to the MGC in the December, served in France and was promoted to corporal. Marrying Lucy Mycroft in 1924, he moved to Darley Dale where he retired after forty-four years working for the LMS Railway.
During 1917 Robert was training at Cannock Chase, as part of the 1st Training Reserve Battalion, which was attached to the Durham Light Infantry (DLI).
