Matthew was a younger brother of Hiram. Before the war he worked as a sawyer’s labourer. Enlisting with Hiram, he served with the Derbyshire Yeomanry. Returning to Fritchley after demob, he married Ellen Byard in 1920 and they moved to live in Belper. He worked as a stone mason and became a general foreman for Derbyshire County Council’s highways department.
