He was born Joseph Hart Massey at Gainsborough, Lincolnshire in 1894 but was evidently known as Hugh from an early age.
On the original Roll of Honour his rank is shown as Lance Corporal.

His brother Donald Edward Massey was killed in the war. He was a Private in the 1st/4th Lincolnshire Regiment (3059) killed on the 19 April 1916 and remembered on the Arras Memorial.
