Bryant was born on 21 September 1875 at Goldalming; his parents were Reuben and Alice Lawrence. He attested at Bakewell in August 1915, a navvy, aged nearly forty, living at The Common Crich. He had married Annie Shaw in 1908. In January 1916 he was discharged from the Army on grounds of ill health although his request for a pension was denied. His army pension record wrongly named him as Henry Lawrence Bryant.

He attested at Bakewell 21/08/15, a navvy aged 39 years 11 months of The Common, Crich. He was 5ft 7in, married to Annie (née Shaw) on 04/07/1908 at Belper Reg. Office. He was discharged under Para 392 (iii) cc K.R on 20/01/16. A letter from Chelsea Hospital dated 18/09/16 rejected his pension appeal.
