Harry was raised by the Stocks family after his parents’ early deaths. His brothers Samuel, John and Ernest had also been adopted. Enlisting with the RNVR as a stoker in Sept 1916, he had land-based postings until serving aboard HMS Devonshire from April 1918 to June 1919. Devonshire had been transferred to the Atlantic in Dec 1916 to protect Allied shipping. He married Winifred Ratheram at Birmingham in 1920, had a family and lived at Southwell, Notts.

Born on 21 January 1897. He enlisted as a stoker on the 25 September 1916. His height was 5ft 6¾; and had fair hair, grey eyes, and a fresh complexion. There was a scar on his left cheek
