Oswald was a cousin of the noted collector Denys Eyre Bower of Chiddington Castle, Kent. He worked at a local co-operative store for most of his working life, becoming the branch manager. He entered France in Sept 1915, serving as a driver with the RFA. Returning home to Crich in Jan 1919, he married Gertrude Littlewood in 1927 March qtr (Belper reg district) and had a son. The family lived at West Bank, Crich, before moving to Bulling Lane.

At Crich parish church on Saturday the wedding took place of Mr John Davis eldest son of Mr and Mrs William Davis of Alfreton and Miss Jane A Bower, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs C Bower of Crich.
