Ernest was born in Crich about 1887 to James and Elizabeth Allen who lived in the Bullbridge area. In 1909, before he went to war, he married Mary Smith and they had a son, Francis Humphrey.

RAILWAY EMPLOYEES JOIN
Three men employed on the Midland Railway at Ambergate have joined the Colours in the persons of Messrs Ernest Allen, Wm. Smithurst and Joseph Smith, and are now waiting to be called up.

Mrs D. Cole, Bull Bridge Ambergate, has received a field service card from Pte Joseph Henry Smith, 12th Sherwood Foresters, to inform her that he has arrived in France. Cpl Ernest Allen, Pte W Smithurst and Pte J H Smith, who were formerly platform porters at Ambergate station are all now in France with the 12th Sherwood Foresters. Pts Allen 12th Sherwood Foresters has been promoted corporal.
