Ernest was born in Crich on 25 December 1886 to James and Elizabeth Allen who lived in the Bullbridge area. In 1909, before he went to war, he married May Smith and they had a son, Francis Humphrey. He died in 1967 at Shardlow.
Note there was another Ernest Allen who served with the Sherwood Foresters and Royal Engineers. He was a railway porter at Ambergate station, born at Cromford but, at the time of enlistment, living in the Bullbridge area (outside Crich Parish). In some records he was a corporal, in others a sergeant.
