Ralph was born at Alderwasley in 1885, educated at Harrow and trained as a mining engineer, working for a time in Rhodesia.
He was awarded the Military Cross. The citation read:
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in carrying out bridge demolition on several consecutive days and invariably under heavy fire. Thoughout the operations he displayed the utmost fearlessness and skill and set a spledid example to all with him.
For a time he was attached to the Nigeria Regiment as temporary lieutenant. The regiment served throughout the First World War in the Cameroons (1914-1916), and in East African Campaign (1916-1918). He was later moved back to the Royal Engineers where he served as a full lieutenant.
