Henry Le F Hurt was born at Alderwasley 5 September 1881 and served with the Royal Naval Reserve during WW1. Hewas promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1900 then promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1910.
On 29 July 1914 he was appointed to Columbine for minesweeping in the Firth of Forth and on 25 February 1916, he was appointed to Halcyon for mine sweeping duties in the acting rank of Commander. On 10 March 1916, he was placed in command of the trawler Sir Mark Sykes. In August 1916, Hurt cleared a minefield in the White Sea. He left Sir Mark Sykes when he was appointed in command of the icebreaker Alexander, the former Russian Alexander Nevsky, on 14 December 1917.
On 15 February, 1919 he reverted to the Retired List. Later, on 29 October 1919, he was promoted to the rank of Commander in recognition of wartime service.

Capt Henry Albert Le Foune Hurt, Commander, RN, has been mentioned in dispatches. He is the younger brother of Major Hurt, of Alderwasley, and has been minesweeping since the war broke out. His brother, Capt Seymour A. A. Hurt, was killed at La Bassee in October 1914. Mrs Henry Hurt is living with the children at Yokecliffe, Wirksworth.

CAPT. HURT OF WIRKSWORTH HONOURED
Our readers will be pleased to learn that Capt Henry Albert Le Fowne Hurt, or Wirksworth has been made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George, in recognition of his services in the Navy during the war. Capt. Hurt who entered the Navy in 1896 has been continually at sea since mobilisation at the outbreak of war, is a son of the late Mr Albert Hurt of Alderwasley Hall, Wirksworth. The past three years he has been serving in the White Sea, and has been twice mentioned in dispatches for his services in mine-sweeping. In the current number of “Blackwoods Magazine” Capt Hurt contributes an interesting story entitled “Mine-field” in which he refers to the dangers which our brave seamen have to undergo sweeping the seas of these terrible and destructive engines of war.
