Charles left for service on 7 March 1918, he was forty years of age.
He married Lillie Saunders, daughter of Diocleson and Ann Saunders 26 September 1903. The Saunders were a well-known Brackenfield family.
Lodging with the Swift family in 1901 was William Foster (he also worked at Lea Mills and served) who married Lillie Saunder's sister Minnie also in 1903.

APPEAL FOR LEA MILLS WORKERS
An appeal was heard, in camera,
in respect of eight employees at Lea Mills, and Tribunal ordered F Barlow (Lea), overlooker JWC Massey, C Swift, Hy Yeomans (Holloway) W Curzon (Near Matlock) and H Holmes (Lea) framework knitters to report in 28 days. G Oakley, foreman (Lea Bridge)was granted four months exemption, with leave, and JE Vallance, clerk (Lea Bridge) was granted three months with leave on the employers appeal, a personal appeal being dismissed. The appeal of WW Lowe, framework knitter, Whatstandwell, was dismissed.

A meeting of the local members of the National Federation of Discharged and Demobilised Soldiers and Sailors was held at Holloway on Tuesday. Mr Drake, of Crich, presiding. It was decided that a sub-branch be opened for the Lea and Holloway district. and the following officers were elected: Chairman Mr W Foster, secretary, Mr J. Parr; committee. Messrs A Dockerill, J Conquest, J Haslam, H Clarkson, B Thorpe, J Wragg, J Hudson, W Spencer and C Swift.
