Pte F. McMillan left for service in October 1915, joining the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. In December 1915, he is listed as:
Pte F.McMillan No 13928 B Coy., 15th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, Gailes Camp, Troon.
He sailed for France as part of the British Expeditionary Force in July 1916 as a member of 1/7th Black Watch 51st Highland Division, I.B.D., A.P.O.
By August 1916, he is recorded as part of B Coy., 6th Entrenching Battalion, Black Watch, B.E.F.
The Parish Magazine records him in January, 1917 as invalided, 1/7th Black Watch and transferred to the Labour Corps.
He may have worked on the Marsden-Smedley estate rather than in the factory.

APPEAL FOR LEA MILLS WORKERS
An appeal was heard, in camera, in respect of eight employees at Lea Mills, and Tribunal ordered F Barlow (Lea), overlooker JWC Massey, C Swift, Hy Yeomans (Holloway) W Curzon (Near Matlock) and H Holmes (Lea) framework knitters to report in 28 days. G Oakley, foreman (Lea Bridge)was granted four months exemption, with leave, and JE Vallance, clerk (Lea Bridge) was granted three months with leave on the emplyers appeal, a personal appeal being dismissed. The appeal of WW Lowe, framework knitter, Whatstandwell, was dismissed.
