He enlisted 4 June 1915 and joined the Machine Gun Section of the Derbyshire Yeomanry. He served in Greece, Egypt and Macedonia. After the war he returned to work at Lea Mills and his name is on the Comford Roll of Honour.

Joined for duty 31/05/15 aged 22; address 21 Cromford Hill; Derbyshire Yeomanry (of Dragoons). Employed as hosiery worker at Lea Mills. Served in Egypt and Macedonia. August 1919, in hospital 25th Eastern Clearing Station. Suffered from malaria. Discharged 23/05/19 with no award for malaria illness (rejected)
Examined 31/05/15 aged 19 years 22 days; a hosiery worker; 5ft 4½in, weighing 147lb; defective teeth and tendency to varicose veins

Dear Sir:
Just a line to thank you for the parcel, it was very good, it was very good of you also, to send it, thanks so much. We had a fine Xmas, and a very good Christmas dinner, the weather also was perfect, but now I am sorry to say, it has broken up, we woke up this morning to find a good snow awaiting us, and awfully cold.
Well I have no more time to say anything, it is stables,

Dear Sir,
I received your parcel yesterday, & was very pleased with the contents. Thank you so much for it. I can tell you it is very nice to know there is some one who think about you out here, & also know the things we need. The weather here has been terribly hot it is just beginning to get pleasant. Well I am sorry to say I cannot say anything more.
