Between 1911 and 1917 Frederick went to Lea Mills as a clerk, after which he joined the Royal Marines, aged eighteen, on 31 December 1917. Two months later on 18 February 1918 he signed up for a twelve year period in the Royal Navy. He remained in the Navy until 1929.
